UK Power Networks, the largest electricity distribution network in the UK, has appointed ThriveMap to elevate its recruitment process for emerging talent and career changers. This collaboration focuses on bespoke pre-hire assessments designed to improve candidate experience, boost retention, and ensure highly accurate hiring decisions.

The challenge

Recruiting for vital roles like Cable Jointers, Overhead Linespeople, and Electrical Fitters demands more than technical skills. Success in these roles hinges on resilience, a strong safety-first mindset, and the ability to excel in challenging environments.

However, traditional assessments fell short. They neither captured the unique demands nor the rewards of these critical positions, leaving candidates unable to fully visualise themselves thriving in the role. This also left hiring teams without the tools to confidently assess candidates’ suitability for these vital positions.

ThriveMap’s Solution

ThriveMap is developing two bespoke Realistic Job Assessments (RJAs):

  • For career changers entering the Experienced Apprenticeship Programme.
  • For foundation apprentices starting their careers in the electrical distribution industry.

These RJAs will replace traditional Situational Judgement Tests (SJTs), immersing candidates in realistic job scenarios to give them a true understanding of the role expectations.

Why Realistic Job Assessments?

ThriveMap’s RJAs will bring the roles to life, offering:

  • Enhanced predictive validity: Role-specific scenarios better predict job performance.
  • Stronger candidate alignment: Candidates gain a clear understanding of role expectations, reducing attrition.
  • Fairness and inclusivity: Standardised assessments ensure consistent evaluation across all applicants.

The new assessments will deliver:

  • Higher retention rates: Candidates who fully understand the role are more likely to thrive.
  • Streamlined recruitment: Faster, more accurate evaluations save time and resources.
  • Superior candidate experience: Immersive and transparent hiring that builds confidence.

UK Power Networks is taking proactive steps to future-proof its workforce, prioritising innovation and excellence in its recruitment process.
